Djembe Drums

Drum Accessories For Keeping Your Drum in Top Condition
It is the compelling sound that usually first attracts someone to learn to play drums. Once you buy one and start to play, you might be surprised to see how involving these instruments are. Soon you will want to take your drum different places to participate in drum circles or other events. You will also be interested in tuning and maintaining your drum. At that point you will begin shopping for drum accessories to help you with these things.
It’s important to protect the drum’s head from various hazards. Extreme temperature changes, rain, and bumps against sharp surfaces are all things that could harm the drum head. This is why a quality bag is one of the first djembe accessories you should get. A good bag will have padding to serve as insulation as well as protection while the bag is being carried from place to place. Better to invest in a quality bag up front than to have to replace a drum head later. Of course, if your drum’s head does ever need replacement you can buy a skin and either rehead it yourself or have someone else rehead it for you.
Other popular djembe accessories are straps for playing while standing up. Straps are available in various sizes and designs to suit both the drum and the drummer. Some drummers use the strap for support while sitting, too, to distribute the weight around their body so they don’t have to hold the djembe with just their legs. Stands are drum accessoriesthat are used for drumming while sitting. Some stands can be adjusted for height and angle and are suitable for playing while standing up.
Djembe accessories for tuning include ropes and lacing tools for tightening them. The ropes seen on a djembe are not simple decorations. They are attached to a metal ring that holds the head onto the drum. You make changes to the tuning by making adjustments to the ropes. It can be done by hand but it’s much easier to use a lacing tool, which is actually a small hook. There are various metal and plastic designs of this drum accessory, including ones that fold into a grip-shaped handle so you can tuck it into your drum bag.
While not exclusively drum accessories, hand care products are also important. Care of the drum head and care of the hands go together. Shea butter is the recommended hand treatment because it is as good for both skins, yours and the drum’s.
As you experiment with the sounds of African percussion you may want to add the resonators known as ksink ksink. These drum accessories are shield-shaped metal pieces that fit around the head, adding complexity to the rhythm in the form of a shaker-type sound. Shakers, bells, and sticks are other instruments you may want to experiment with. You can find them in the same places where you buy other djembe accessories.

Wood djembe drum, ‘Sankofa’ (Ghana) $159.95 The outlines of a cross and an arched bird holding an egg in its beak, represent Sankofa, and Adinkra symbol suggesting that the values of the past need to be revived in the present. Djembe drums originated in the country of Benin, but the instrument has since been incorporated into the music of neighboring lands. Ernestina Oppong elaborates contours inspired by rhythm, making this a wonderful decorative accent for any home. Oppong combines a passion for carving with music, resulting in traditional instruments with contemporary flair. “Tweneboah,” a kind of hardwood, provides the body for the drum; its golden tone highlighting the engaging designs. Oppong applies shoe and mansion polish to enhance the wood’s smooth, radiant appearance. Iron rod rings are attached to the mouth of the drum and wrapped with cotton to prevent rusting. Through these rings nylon ropes are double-woven, securely fastening the goatskin to the wood. To play, sit on the edge of a chair with ankles crossed, the top of the drum fitting neatly between the knees as the base of the drum rests behind the heels. This way the drum is angled away from the player. Sitting up straight with hands resting on the drum’s playing surface, the wrists should become flat and this is the position to create the standard djembe sounds. Djembes produce three basic sounds: bass, tone, and slap. BASS: With the hand flat and fingers together, place the hand at the dimension of two fists above the center of the playing surface. Allow the hand to strike and bounce back to the original position above the center. TONE: This is the high-pitched sound produced by striking the top surface nearest the edge with firmly placed fingers. SLAP: Strike the playing surface’s edge first with the heel of the hand, and then allow the fingers to naturally bounce down towards the drum’s center. |
